It is a wood-decaying saprotroph that naturally colonizes the stumps and trunks of broad-leaved trees, exhibiting a robust ability to break down lignin and cellulose components in the growth medium.
The origin of this species is traced to warm temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere, particularly across East Asia and Southern Europe. Over the last few decades, it has become a staple in commercial mushroom production due to its culinary versatility, firm texture, and distinct earthy, nutty flavor profile that persists even after cooking.
Morphologically, the fungus produces clusters of mushrooms with creamy-brown convex caps and long, fibrous stalks. In cultivation, the mycelium is known for its aggressive growth rate. It can be grown on a variety of substrates, including sterilized sawdust, wood chips, or straw-based mixes enriched with nitrogen sources like wheat bran, which significantly boosts biological efficiency.
Successful agronomy of Agrocybe cylindracea demands precision in environmental control. The growth cycle involves an incubation phase followed by a fruiting phase where temperatures must be maintained between 16°C and 22°C. Relative humidity should stay consistently high (85–90%), and high levels of fresh air exchange are mandatory to prevent the development of stunted or malformed stems caused by high CO2 concentrations.
Economically, it is sold fresh, dried, or pickled. Producers must remain vigilant against common pathogens such as Trichoderma (green mold) and bacterial blotch, which thrive in poorly sanitized environments. Integrated pest management, including regular disinfection of growing rooms and rigorous quality control of the spawn, remains the primary method for ensuring a profitable and healthy harvest.
