In the wild, the species is native to the Caribbean region, primarily Cuba and Haiti, and is also found in Florida. Its cultivation range is limited to tropical and subtropical climates. In agricultural and ornamental settings, it is grown in open ground in mild climates, or as a greenhouse or container plant in cooler regions where environmental control is necessary.
Botanically, the plant is a low-growing shrub with a subterranean or semi-subterranean tuberous stem. Its leaves are pinnate, leathery, rigid, and dark green. A defining characteristic is its slow growth rate. The culture is dioecious, meaning male and female reproductive structures—known as strobili—are produced on separate individual plants.
Agricultural practice requires specific environmental management. The soil must possess exceptional drainage capabilities, as waterlogging is lethal to the root system. Zamia prefers bright, indirect light and a temperature range between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. It is crucial to avoid sudden temperature fluctuations and drafts, which can lead to leaf drop or the development of fungal rot in the tuber.
The primary use of this culture is within the ornamental sector. Due to its resilience and exotic aesthetic, it is highly valued in tropical landscaping and indoor design. Historically, the tubers contained starch utilized by indigenous populations for food after careful processing to remove toxins; however, in modern times, the plant is cultivated exclusively for ornamental, landscaping, and botanical collection purposes.
