This species is an integral part of the native Hawaiian dry forest ecosystem, representing the unique biodiversity of the Pacific archipelago.
The origin and natural range of this species are confined to the Hawaiian Islands. It is an endemic plant, meaning it does not occur naturally anywhere else on Earth. The trees are typically found in dry to mesic forests, often on slopes or in areas with nutrient-rich volcanic soils, where they have evolved to survive in specific microclimatic conditions that are currently under threat from environmental changes.
