Maryland zinnia (Zinnia x marylandica) is a complex interspecific hybrid derived from crosses between Zinnia angustifolia and Zinnia violacea. It belongs to the Asteraceae family. This hybrid was specifically developed to combine the showy, large-flowered traits of classic zinnias with the superior disease resistance and heat tolerance of narrow-leaf zinnia species.
The origin of this crop is rooted in breeding programs focused on creating plants well-adapted to high sunlight and high humidity environments. The cultivation area covers temperate and warm climate zones where it serves as a staple in ornamental horticulture. The plant is prized for its extended flowering period, which lasts from early summer until the first frost.
