Zombie palm

The Zombie palm (Zombia antillarum) is a distinctive species of fan palm and the sole member of the monotypic genus Zombia within the Arecaceae family. It is renowned for its unique physical structure, which is quite unlike many other palms found in the Caribbean region.

Native to the island of Hispaniola, which includes both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, this palm thrives in dry, rocky, and calcareous soil conditions. Its natural habitat is typically found in coastal or inland areas characterized by warm temperatures and sporadic rainfall.

Botany-wise, the plant is best known for its defensive armor. The trunk is densely covered with sharp, elongated spines, which are essentially modified segments of the leaf sheaths. These spines can grow to be quite sturdy, serving as a formidable deterrent against herbivores.

Agronomically, the Zombie palm requires full sunlight and exceptionally well-draining soil to thrive. It is highly drought-tolerant once established, but it is prone to root rot if grown in heavy or waterlogged substrates, making soil preparation the most critical factor in successful cultivation.

Economically and horticulturally, Zombia antillarum is primarily used as an ornamental plant in tropical landscaping.
