The species possesses a broad distribution across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe and North America. It is strictly an epiphytic moss, typically colonizing the bark of deciduous trees such as willows, poplars, and maples. It thrives in locations characterized by moderate humidity and filtered light, commonly found in sheltered wooded areas or mature orchard perimeters.

Botanically, Zygodon viridissimus forms dense, bright green turfs. Its stems are relatively short and densely covered with lanceolate or linear-lanceolate leaves. A defining characteristic of the species is its high efficiency in vegetative reproduction, utilizing gemmae (brood bodies) that develop on the leaves to facilitate rapid colonisation of new surface areas on the host tree.

Regarding environmental requirements, the species is highly sensitive to atmospheric pollutants, particularly sulfur dioxide, making it a reliable indicator of clean environments. It prefers substrates with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Since it does not rely on soil for nutrient intake, its health is almost entirely dependent on the quality of moisture and nutrients captured from precipitation and dust on the bark surface.

In terms of agricultural management, there are no specific cultivation practices or pests associated with this moss, as it is non-parasitic and benign to trees. Diseases affecting this moss are usually tied to the deterioration of the host tree’s bark or unfavorable climatic shifts.
