Syrian bean-caper

Syrian bean-caper (lat. Zygophyllum fabago L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Zygophyllaceae family. It is recognized as a hardy xerophyte, adapted to survive in regions with extreme temperature fluctuations and high soil salinity levels, making it a subject of interest for arid-zone agriculture.

Originally native to Western and Central Asia, its range extends to the Mediterranean region. In agricultural management, it is valued for its ability to thrive in degraded landscapes, including abandoned saline fields. Its biological role is primarily associated with soil conservation, as it effectively binds loose substrates and prevents erosion in dry ecosystems.

The plant features succulent, opposite leaves and distinct flowers with yellow-orange petals and prominent stamens. Its root system is exceptionally deep, which allows the plant to tap into groundwater reserves, ensuring survival during prolonged droughts. This deep-rooting habit makes it an excellent candidate for improving the physical properties of compacted soils.

Agrotechnical requirements for the Syrian bean-caper are minimal. It thrives on poor, alkaline, and salty soils where traditional crops fail. While it can tolerate wide temperature ranges, it requires full sunlight for optimal development. Propagation is primarily through seeds, though the process is sometimes limited by seed dormancy, which may require specific pretreatment to improve germination rates.

Economic and utility applications are multifaceted:
