Acholeplasmatosis is a plant disease caused by microorganisms belonging to the order Acholeplasmatales. As members of the class Mollicutes, these pathogens lack a traditional cell wall, which makes them highly dependent on their plant host and specialized vectors for transmission within agricultural environments.

These pathogens predominantly infect a wide range of crops, including vegetables such as tomatoes and potatoes, as well as various fruit trees and berries. By colonizing the plant's phloem, the organisms disrupt the translocation of essential nutrients, leading to a general decline in the plant's physiological health and overall metabolic function.

Symptoms of the infection are typically systemic and include severe leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and the development of distorted, leafy structures instead of flowers. In many cases, infected plants exhibit a bushy appearance known as "witches' broom," which significantly impacts the yield potential and the quality of the harvest.

The spread of Acholeplasmatales is primarily mediated by sucking insects, including leafhoppers and aphids. These vectors acquire the pathogen from infected plants and transmit it to healthy ones during feeding. Warm climatic conditions and the presence of reservoir hosts in the form of surrounding weeds play a critical role in the rapid expansion of the disease within fields.

Because there is no curative treatment for plants once they are colonized by these pathogens, disease management focuses on prevention and control:

  • Systematic monitoring and control of insect vectors using insecticides.
  • Removal of infected plants and weeds that serve as disease reservoirs.
  • Usage of high-quality, certified, and disease-free seeds or seedlings.
  • Implementation of spatial isolation from known infected areas.
  • Application of cultural practices that promote crop vigor and resilience.
