Tobacco yellow mosaic virus

Albetovirus gammatabaci

Description

Causal agent and disease type. Albetovirus gammatabaci is the identified causal agent of this viral disease. Classified within the Albetovirus genus, this pathogen induces systemic infection in plants, significantly disrupting physiological processes, photosynthesis, and overall plant metabolism.

Affected crops. The virus primarily infects tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). However, it exhibits a broad host range among various Solanaceous plants, including both cultivated crops and wild weeds, which serve as crucial reservoirs for the pathogen during the off-season.

Symptoms and signs of infection. The primary visual evidence is a mosaic pattern of yellow chlorotic spots and blotches on the foliage. In addition to discoloration, plants often display leaf deformation, stunted internodes, and reduced leaf size. The overall appearance of the plant is significantly compromised, leading to a general loss of vigor.

Conditions for development and harmfulness. Disease spread is largely mediated by insect vectors, primarily aphids, which transmit the virus while feeding on plant sap. Mechanical transmission can also occur during agricultural operations. The economic impact is substantial, as the infection severely reduces both the dry weight and the quality of the harvested tobacco leaves.

Protection and prevention measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include the following:

  • Planting virus-resistant or tolerant cultivars.
  • Rigorous control of aphid populations using targeted insecticides.
  • Elimination of reservoir weeds within and around fields.
  • Disinfection of farm equipment to prevent mechanical transmission.
  • Strict adherence to sanitation protocols during handling and transplanting.
