Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) is a significant plant pathogen classified under the Alfamovirus genus. It is recognized for its broad host range, affecting over 600 species of plants worldwide, including many essential agricultural crops. The virus is known for its high genetic diversity, which poses a constant challenge for agricultural pathology and crop breeding programs.

This pathogen impacts a wide variety of plants, primarily targeting legumes such as alfalfa, clover, peas, and beans, but also causing severe damage to solanaceous crops like potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers. Because it infects many weed species and perennial plants, the virus can persist in the environment for long periods, serving as a permanent threat to annual crop cycles.

Symptoms of the infection can vary widely depending on the host species and the environmental conditions. The most common indicators include

  • interveinal chlorosis (yellow mosaic patterns);
  • stunting and reduced vigor of the entire plant;
  • leaf crinkling, cupping, or necrotic spotting;
  • reduced flower production and fruit yield;
  • general chlorotic mottle on younger leaves.

The virus is primarily transmitted by various aphid species in a non-persistent manner, meaning the insect transmits the virus quickly after feeding on an infected plant. Additionally, AMV is seed-borne in many host plants, allowing for long-distance spread and infection at the onset of crop growth. Mechanical transmission through contact between infected and healthy plants during agricultural operations is also a significant factor.

Effective management focuses on prevention rather than treatment, as there are no direct chemical controls for viral infections in the field. Key strategies include using certified virus-free seeds, controlling aphid populations with appropriate insecticides, and implementing strict weed management to remove alternative hosts. Furthermore, creating spatial separation between susceptible crops and established alfalfa fields is crucial to minimize the risk of secondary infections.
