Garlic allexivirus (Allexivirus betallii) is a plant virus belonging to the genus Allexivirus within the Betaflexiviridae family. It is a filamentous virus with a single-stranded RNA genome that specifically targets plants of the Allium genus.

The primary host for this pathogen is garlic (Allium sativum). This virus is frequently found in mixed infections alongside other viruses, such as potyviruses and carlaviruses, which collectively contribute to the severe decline and degeneration of commercial garlic stocks worldwide.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as mosaic patterns, chlorotic streaks, and yellow stripes on the leaves. Infected plants typically exhibit reduced vigor, stunted growth, and altered bulb development, often leading to lower yields and poor storage quality of the harvested produce.

The spread of Allexivirus betallii is primarily facilitated by eriophyid mites, specifically those of the genus Aceria. These mites act as vectors, transmitting the virus during feeding. Mechanical transmission through infected tools and the use of systemically infected bulbs for propagation are also significant factors in its spread.

Management strategies focus on breaking the infection cycle through the use of virus-indexed planting material generated via meristem culture. Integrated pest management, including regular application of acaricides to control mite populations and strict sanitation protocols for farm equipment, are essential to minimize the economic impact on garlic production.
