Alligatorweed stunting is a viral disease caused by the Alligatorweed stunting virus (AWSV). This pathogen specifically targets Alternanthera philoxeroides, a resilient aquatic plant commonly known as alligatorweed, which is notorious for clogging waterways and disrupting irrigation systems globally.
The host range of this virus is primarily limited to Alternanthera philoxeroides. Due to its narrow specificity, the virus is of significant interest to researchers investigating sustainable methods for managing invasive alligatorweed populations without the use of broad-spectrum chemical herbicides.
The symptoms of the disease are characterized by severe growth inhibition. Infected plants exhibit significantly shortened internodes, stunted stems, and leaf malformation.
