Alphacarmovirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Tombusviridae family, responsible for systemic infections in various economically important crops. These viruses are characterized by a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome, which interferes with plant metabolic pathways and disrupts normal growth cycles.

This genus predominantly targets species within the Cucurbitaceae family, including melons, cucumbers, and squashes. By invading host tissues, the virus systematically compromises the plant's physiological functions, leading to significant reductions in both crop yield and quality, especially in intensive greenhouse environments.

Symptoms of an Alphacarmovirus infection typically include characteristic mosaic patterns, chlorotic spotting, leaf deformation, and stunted growth. In severe cases, systemic necrosis occurs, affecting stems and fruits, which leads to the premature collapse and death of the plant during the critical stages of its development.

The transmission of these viruses is unique, as they often rely on soil-borne fungal vectors, specifically Olpidium bornovanus. The virus persists in the soil, infecting roots through the zoospores of these fungi. Additionally, mechanical transmission through contaminated tools, irrigation water, or direct plant-to-plant contact poses a constant threat in high-density plantings.

Effective management strategies focus on preventing the introduction of the virus into the growing environment. Key preventive measures include:
