Alphacarmovirus dianthi
Description
The causative agent of the disease is Alphacarmovirus dianthi, commonly known as the Carnation ringspot virus (CRSV). It belongs to the Tombusviridae family and is a highly stable plant virus. The pathogen disrupts the plant's physiological processes by replicating within the cytoplasm, leading to systemic infection that compromises the host's overall vitality.
The primary host for this pathogen is the carnation plant (Dianthus caryophyllus). While primarily a concern for greenhouse production, the virus can also affect various wild Dianthus species and other related plants, which often act as latent reservoirs for the virus in the environment.
Clinical signs of the infection include the development of chlorotic rings, spots, and mosaic patterns on the foliage. Infected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and brittle stems. In floral crops, the symptoms often extend to the blossoms, causing flower distortion and color breaking, which renders the flowers unfit for market sale.
The virus is primarily transmitted through mechanical means. In production environments, this most commonly occurs during routine horticultural practices such as pruning, pinching, or harvesting when sap is transferred from infected plants to healthy ones via contaminated tools or hands. Soil-borne transmission and contact between roots or leaves are also recognized routes of spread.
Since there are no curative treatments for viral infections in plants, management focuses strictly on exclusion and sanitation. Key practices include:
- Establishing nurseries with virus-free mother plants obtained through meristem culture;
- Regular disinfection of shears and cutting tools with chemical disinfectants;
- Strict weed control protocols to eliminate alternative host plants;
- Routine inspection and roguing of any plants showing suspicious symptoms.
