Description
Aspergillus alphachrysovirus (Alphachrysovirus aspergilli) is a member of the Chrysoviridae family of mycoviruses. These are viruses that infect fungi, acting as biological agents capable of altering the metabolism, growth, and pathogenicity of their fungal hosts, which include various species within the Aspergillus genus.
The virus is characterized by a segmented double-stranded RNA genome. It propagates within the fungal cytoplasm, utilizing the host's cellular machinery for replication. While it does not infect plants directly, its impact on fungi that are known plant pathogens or post-harvest contaminants makes it a subject of agricultural importance.
Symptoms of the infection in fungi are often subtle, leading to a condition known as hypovirulence. Common manifestations include reduced radial growth rates, alterations in the production of secondary metabolites (including mycotoxins), and changes in the density and coloration of aerial hyphae compared to healthy isolates.
Transmission of the virus occurs primarily through hyphal anastomosis, where cytoplasmic exchange allows the virus to pass from an infected fungal colony to a healthy one. Vertical transmission also occurs through the fungal spores. Rapid spread is favored by environments that promote heavy fungal colonization, such as high-humidity storage areas or fields with poor aeration.
Regarding management and protection, the presence of the virus can be considered a natural biological limiting factor for fungal growth. Research into utilizing mycoviruses for biocontrol focuses on the potential to weaken aggressive fungal pathogens. Current strategies involve monitoring fungal populations and understanding these host-virus interactions to mitigate the risks associated with fungal contamination of crops.
