Alphachrysovirus isariae is a specific mycovirus belonging to the Chrysoviridae family. It primarily infects entomopathogenic fungi, most notably Isaria fumosorosea. Unlike typical crop pathogens that target plant tissues, this virus is a hyperparasite that negatively impacts the biological agents utilized in integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
The causative agent is a double-stranded RNA virus. It causes a viral infection within the host fungal cells, hijacking the metabolic machinery of the fungus to replicate. This interaction alters the host's physiological state, leading to a condition commonly referred to as viral degradation of the fungal strain.
The range of affected organisms includes laboratory-cultured and field-applied strains of Isaria. The economic damage is significant because these fungi are essential for controlling pests like whiteflies and thrips.
