Lettuce mottle virus (Alphacytorhabdovirus lactucamaculante) is a significant plant disease caused by a virus from the Rhabdoviridae family. As a systemic pathogen, it invades the vascular tissues of host plants, causing profound physiological stress and morphological changes that can drastically reduce harvest yields.
The primary crop affected by this virus is lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The virus exhibits a narrow host range primarily within the Asteraceae family. Wild weeds often act as asymptomatic reservoirs, allowing the virus to survive between growing seasons and serving as primary inoculum sources for commercial agricultural fields.
The clinical signs of the disease include distinct leaf mottling, chlorotic spotting, and general stunting of the plant. In advanced stages, leaf tissues often develop necrosis, leading to distortion and poor head formation.
