The causal agent of this disease is the Alphacytorhabdovirus lactucanecante, commonly referred to as the Lettuce necrotic stunt virus (LNSV). Classified within the Rhabdoviridae family, this RNA virus targets the host's vascular system, causing systemic infection. Once inside the plant, it disrupts cellular functions and interferes with nutrient transport, leading to severe physiological stress.

The primary host for this pathogen is cultivated lettuce (Lactuca sativa). While it predominantly affects commercial lettuce fields, it can also manifest in protected cropping environments. The impact of the virus is significant, as it can render entire batches of leafy greens unmarketable due to the severe visual degradation of the leaves, resulting in economic losses for growers.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by initial chlorotic spots that rapidly progress into tissue necrosis, particularly along the leaf margins. Infected plants often show stunted growth, distorted leaf development, and overall discolouration. In severe instances, the necrosis becomes widespread, resulting in premature tissue death and a significant reduction in biomass, which severely impacts yield quality.

The transmission of the virus is primarily mediated by insect vectors, most notably aphid species, which facilitate the rapid spread of the pathogen across fields. Additionally, the virus can be spread through mechanical transmission via contaminated tools, equipment, or handling during thinning and harvest. Environmental conditions that favour vector activity and warm temperatures significantly accelerate the disease spread.

Management strategies focus on preventive measures and vector control to mitigate the spread of LNSV:

  • Use certified, virus-free seed or transplant material.
  • Implement rigorous aphid management programs using biological or chemical control.
  • Remove and destroy symptomatic plants immediately to reduce inoculum sources.
  • Maintain weed-free perimeters around fields to prevent alternative host colonization.
  • Sanitize all farming tools and equipment regularly to prevent mechanical spread.
