Description
Alphaendornavirus helicobasidii is a unique mycovirus known to infect the fungal pathogen Helicobasidium purpureum. This fungus is widely recognized in agriculture as the causative agent of violet root rot, a devastating soil-borne disease affecting various root crops and ornamental plants.
The virus belongs to the Endornaviridae family. Unlike many other viruses that spread through vectors, this agent is maintained within the fungal mycelium. It is characterized by persistent, symptomless (cryptic) infection within the host fungal cells, where it replicates as an RNA molecule without forming an external protein capsid.
Plants affected by the carrier fungus include carrots, sweet potatoes, sugar beets, and various orchard trees. The presence of the virus within the fungal mycelium can alter the host fungus's fitness, metabolism, and virulence, which may indirectly influence the severity of the root rot disease on the affected crops.
Symptoms of the disease on crops are characterized by the development of a purple or reddish-brown fungal felt on the root surfaces. This leads to wilting, stunted growth, and ultimate death of the root system. The role of the virus in modulating these symptoms is a subject of ongoing phytopathological research.
Management strategies focus on controlling the primary fungal pathogen rather than the virus itself:
