Causative agent and disease type. Alphaendornavirus viciae is a member of the Endornaviridae family, known for causing persistent, systemic, and often asymptomatic infections in plants. Unlike many other plant viruses, it typically does not rely on insect vectors, instead focusing on vertical transmission via seeds. This makes it a significant, albeit invisible, biological factor in plant pathology.

Susceptible crops. The virus primarily infects species within the Vicia genus, with Vicia sativa (common vetch) being a notable host. Because it is an endornavirus, it persists within the plant cells throughout their entire lifecycle, potentially spreading through generations of plants if seeds are harvested from infected individuals.

Symptoms and signs. The hallmark of an Alphaendornavirus viciae infection is its lack of clear symptoms. Infected plants rarely show stunted growth, leaf discoloration, or necrosis. Because the virus does not cause obvious visual distress, farmers and breeders often remain unaware of the infection without the use of advanced molecular diagnostics, such as RT-PCR or high-throughput sequencing.

Development and impact. The virus spreads almost exclusively through the seed. Its impact on the host is usually mild but chronic, potentially affecting the metabolic processes of the plant. Over time, the accumulation of viral particles may lead to decreased vigor, reduced seed quality, and compromised resilience, which can be detrimental in high-yield forage production systems.

Protection and prevention. Controlling this virus is entirely dependent on strict phytosanitary practices. Management strategies include:

  • Sourcing certified virus-free seeds for planting.
  • Implementing rigorous molecular testing protocols for breeding programs.
  • Establishing quarantine zones for seed multiplication to prevent the spread of undetected viral strains to commercial fields.
