Description

Alphanecrovirus is a genus of plant pathogenic viruses within the Tombusviridae family. These viruses, most notably represented by the Tobacco Necrosis Virus (TNV), are significant threats to various agricultural and ornamental crops, often causing localized or systemic necrosis.

The virus has a wide host range, including potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and tulip bulbs. Unlike many other plant viruses transmitted by insects, Alphanecrovirus relies primarily on soil-borne chytrid fungi, specifically Olpidium brassicae, to infect the root systems of healthy plants through zoospores.

Symptoms often manifest as necrotic spots, lesions, or rings on leaves and stems. In some hosts, the infection can lead to root necrosis, stunted growth, and reduced yield. Because symptoms can sometimes mimic other physiological stresses or fungal diseases, laboratory diagnosis is essential for accurate identification.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly soil moisture. High moisture levels facilitate the motility of the fungal vector's zoospores, allowing the virus to spread rapidly through the root zone. Consequently, greenhouse environments with poor drainage are particularly vulnerable to outbreaks.

Effective management requires a combination of strict sanitation and environmental control. Key strategies include:

  • Utilizing steam-sterilized or disease-free soil substrates.
  • Implementing rigorous disinfection protocols for all greenhouse tools and surfaces.
  • Managing irrigation to avoid excessive soil moisture that encourages fungal vector activity.
  • Removing and destroying infected plant material promptly to limit the inoculum source.
