Alphanucleorhabdovirus colocasiae is a plant-pathogenic virus belonging to the family Rhabdoviridae. It is responsible for causing serious mosaic-like symptoms in plants of the Araceae family, most notably in taro (Colocasia esculenta). This virus replicates within the nucleus of the host cell, leading to systemic infection.

The host range is primarily limited to taro plants, which are a staple food crop in many parts of the world. The disease thrives in warm and humid environments that favor both the host plant and the insect vectors. By colonizing the vascular system, the virus disrupts vital plant functions, severely impacting photosynthesis and resource allocation.

Symptoms are distinct and usually manifest as a yellow or pale green mosaic pattern on the leaves. Infected plants often show stunted growth, distorted leaf blades, and overall reduced vigor. The tubers of affected plants are typically smaller in size and lower in quality, which directly affects the economic yield for farmers.

The transmission of this virus occurs mainly through insect vectors, specifically aphids and leafhoppers, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected tissue. Mechanical transmission is another concern, occurring when sap from infected plants is transferred to healthy ones through contaminated garden tools, pruning equipment, or human handling during harvesting.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the only viable strategy for control. Since there are no chemical cures for viral plant infections, prevention is paramount. Farmers should prioritize the selection of virus-free planting stock, maintain high standards of field hygiene, and control insect populations in the vicinity to break the transmission cycle. Constant monitoring and roguing of infected plants are essential to prevent the spread to adjacent healthy fields.
