Pathogen and Disease Type: Rice transitory yellowing is a viral disease caused by the Alphanucleorhabdovirus oryzae. It belongs to the Rhabdoviridae family and acts as a vascular-restricted virus. The pathogen disrupts the normal physiological functions of the rice plant, leading to stunted growth and yellowing of the foliage.
Host Crops and Range: The disease primarily affects Oryza sativa (cultivated rice). It is geographically concentrated in East and Southeast Asia, where rice production is intensive. The virus is not seed-borne, meaning that healthy planting material is not contaminated at the molecular level through the seeds themselves.
Symptoms and Signs of Infection: Infected plants exhibit a distinct yellowing starting from the older leaves and progressing upwards. This is often accompanied by severe stunting and excessive tillering. In advanced stages, plants fail to produce panicles, and if they do, the grain is typically empty, leading to significant yield losses for farmers.
Conditions for Development and Spread: The virus is transmitted in a persistent, propagative manner by green leafhoppers, specifically Nephotettix apicalis and Nephotettix cincticeps. Once a leafhopper acquires the virus, it remains a vector for the remainder of its lifespan. Warm and humid environmental conditions are highly favorable for vector population growth and subsequent viral spread.
Management and Prevention Strategies: Effective control requires integrated pest management (IPM) focusing on the vector. Key practices include applying systemic insecticides to reduce leafhopper populations during the early vegetative stage. Breeding and planting resistant rice cultivars remains the most sustainable approach to minimize the economic damage caused by this viral pathogen.
