Alphapartitivirus tredecimheterobasidion is a double-stranded RNA mycovirus belonging to the Partitiviridae family. It specifically infects fungi of the genus Heterobasidion, which are notorious for causing widespread root and butt rot in coniferous tree species, leading to significant economic losses in the forestry sector.

As a mycovirus, it operates as an intracellular symbiont or parasite within the fungal hyphae. Unlike viruses that infect plants directly, this agent targets the metabolism of the fungus itself, often leading to a phenomenon known as hypovirulence, where the fungal host becomes less pathogenic to its tree hosts.

The symptoms of infection within the fungus include reduced mycelial growth rates, alterations in colony morphology, and a significant decrease in the secretion of wood-degrading enzymes. These physiological changes limit the ability of the fungus to survive and thrive within the host timber and roots, effectively weakening the pathogen's competitive edge.

Transmission occurs exclusively through mycelial fusion (anastomosis) between infected and healthy fungal colonies. This horizontal transmission route is crucial for the natural regulation of Heterobasidion populations in the forest, as it allows the virus to spread within the fungal network and suppress the development of the fungal disease over time.
