Alphapartitivirus triheterobasidion is a double-stranded RNA mycovirus that primarily infects fungi of the genus Heterobasidion. These fungi are notorious for causing extensive root rot in coniferous trees, representing one of the most destructive diseases in temperate forest ecosystems globally.
As a member of the Partitiviridae family, this virus replicates within the host fungal cells. Unlike conventional viruses that cause rapid disease in plants, this agent acts as an endosymbiont that modifies the physiological and metabolic functions of the fungal host without necessarily killing it.
