Alphapartitivirus uniheterobasidion is a specific type of mycovirus belonging to the Partitiviridae family. Unlike traditional agricultural pathogens that infect vascular plants, this virus acts as a parasite to the fungus Heterobasidion annosum, which is the primary agent of conifer root rot worldwide.

The disease type is a viral infection at the fungal level. The virus is composed of double-stranded RNA encapsulated within a viral particle. Its life cycle is strictly dependent on the host fungus, as it replicates within the mycelial cytoplasm and is transmitted through hyphal anastomosis during fungal colonization.
