Alsuviricetes represents a class of viruses characterized by a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. Within the field of plant pathology, this class encompasses a wide range of pathogens that cause systemic infections in various economically important plant species, often resulting in significant agricultural losses worldwide.
These viruses affect a broad spectrum of host plants, including vegetable crops like tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as field crops like cereals and legumes. Due to their ability to systemically colonize host tissues, these pathogens can compromise the overall vigor and physiological health of the entire plant, leading to stunted development and reduced photosynthetic capacity.
Symptoms of Alsuviricetes infection are highly variable depending on the virus strain and host plant species. Key signs include mosaic patterns, chlorotic spots, yellowing (yellows), severe leaf distortion, and stunted growth. In many crops, the presence of the virus results in decreased fruit set and poor quality of harvested products, making the crop non-marketable.
