Amalgavirus allii, commonly known as garlic amalgavirus, is a plant pathogen belonging to the Amalgavirus genus. It is typically characterized by a persistent and often latent infection, meaning it colonizes plant tissues without necessarily causing immediate or severe morphological changes, which complicates early field detection.
The primary hosts for this virus are species of the Allium genus, most notably garlic (Allium sativum). The virus is globally distributed in areas where garlic is cultivated commercially, often persisting through cycles of vegetative propagation in contaminated stocks.
Symptomatology is generally subtle. Affected plants may show mild mosaic patterns, leaf chlorosis, or general growth stunting. In many cases, the reduction in vigor is progressive, leading to lower yields and inferior bulb quality rather than sudden plant death or dramatic necrotic lesions.
The transmission of Amalgavirus allii occurs primarily through vegetative propagation. Because the virus is systemic and persistent, it is passed efficiently from the mother plant to the bulbils or cloves used for planting.
