Amalgavirus cepae is a plant viral pathogen belonging to the genus Amalgavirus. Unlike acute viral infections that cause rapid tissue necrosis, this virus typically establishes a persistent infection, often remaining latent within the host tissues while compromising the plant's overall vigor and physiological performance over time.

The primary host for this pathogen is the onion (Allium cepa). The virus is known for its ability to impact commercial onion production, particularly affecting crops grown from infected seeds. It has been documented in various onion-producing regions, representing a significant concern for both vegetable farmers and seed producers.

Symptoms of Amalgavirus cepae infection in onion plants often include mild to moderate mosaic patterns on the leaves, general chlorosis, and stunted growth. In many cases, infected plants show signs of reduced vigor and diminished bulb size, which directly affects harvest quantity and quality. Diagnosis can be difficult due to the frequent absence of severe necrotic symptoms.

The primary pathway for virus transmission is through infected seeds. Since the virus can be transmitted through pollen during the fertilization process, seed lots can easily become contaminated. Once introduced into a field, the infection can persist through improper crop management, such as failing to practice adequate crop rotation or utilizing untreated, potentially infected propagation material.

The economic damage caused by this virus is primarily due to reduced yield and poor post-harvest quality, as infected bulbs are often less resilient during storage. Since there is no chemical cure for systemic viral infections in plants, management focuses on stringent preventive strategies:

  • Implementing rigorous monitoring to identify and rogue infected plants;
  • Maintaining proper isolation distances for seed production fields;
