Description

Ampelovirus is a genus of viruses within the family Closteroviridae, responsible for several significant diseases in grapevines, most notably the Grapevine Leafroll-associated Viruses (GLRaVs). These viruses are transmitted systemically and primarily affect the phloem tissues, causing long-term physiological decline in the host plant.

These viruses affect various species of the genus Vitis, especially Vitis vinifera. By clogging the plant's vascular system, ampeloviruses disrupt the transport of nutrients and sugars from the leaves to the fruit and roots, which severely weakens the plant and reduces its economic lifespan in commercial viticulture.

The characteristic symptoms include chlorosis between the leaf veins, followed by the downward curling of leaf margins, which is most prominent in late summer or autumn. On red grape varieties, leaves may turn reddish, while on white varieties, they show yellowish discoloration. Affected vines exhibit poor fruit ripening, low sugar content, and overall stunted growth.

Transmission occurs through two primary pathways: the movement of insect vectors and the propagation of infected nursery material. Mealybugs (Pseudococcidae) and scale insects (Coccidae) are the main vectors that acquire and spread the virus between vines. Human intervention via grafting or using non-certified infected cuttings is also a major driver of the virus's spread across regions.

Effective management focuses on prevention rather than cure, as there are no chemical treatments to eliminate the virus once a vine is infected. Prevention includes the use of virus-indexed propagation material, implementation of strict sanitation in nurseries, and rigorous monitoring and control of mealybug and scale insect populations within the vineyard to break the infection cycle.
