Pathogen and disease type. Grapevine ampelovirus (Ampelovirus nanoavii) is a member of the Ampelovirus genus within the Closteroviridae family. This is a severe viral disease that specifically attacks the phloem tissue of the host plant. By obstructing the vascular system, the virus disrupts the translocation of sugars and essential nutrients, fundamentally altering the plant's metabolism and developmental trajectory.

Affected crops and symptoms. The primary host for this pathogen is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The hallmark symptom is the curling of leaves downwards, often accompanied by chlorosis or reddening, depending on the cultivar. Leaves may become brittle and thickened, and the overall growth of the vine is stunted. These symptoms typically become most visible during the late growing season as the plant matures.

Conditions for development and spread. The virus spreads largely through the propagation of infected scions and rootstocks. Mechanical transmission via contaminated pruning tools also plays a role in local spread. Furthermore, insect vectors such as mealybugs and soft scale insects are highly efficient at transmitting the virus from diseased plants to healthy ones, particularly in warm climates that favor vector populations.

Grapes from infected vines often fail to reach optimal sugar levels, mature unevenly, and have poor wine-making potential. Over time, the cumulative stress weakens the vines, leading to reduced winter hardiness and a shortened lifespan for the entire vineyard block.

Protection and prevention measures. As there is no cure for viral diseases in the field, prevention is the only effective management strategy. Growers must exclusively source certified, virus-tested nursery stock. Rigorous control of insect vectors and strict adherence to sanitation protocols—such as sterilizing pruning shears with alcohol or bleach—are crucial to prevent the introduction and spread of the pathogen within the vineyard.
