Pineapple ampelovirus (Ampelovirus triananas) is a specific viral pathogen belonging to the genus Ampelovirus within the Closteroviridae family. This virus is recognized as the primary etiological agent responsible for pineapple mealybug wilt, a disease that causes significant economic impact in pineapple production areas globally.
The primary host for this pathogen is the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). The virus systemically affects the plant tissues, interfering with vital metabolic processes, reducing plant vigor, and leading to severe developmental stagnation in both vegetative and reproductive stages.
Symptoms of infection often begin with a distinct color change in the leaves, shifting to reddish-yellow hues, followed by a loss of turgor and downward curving of the leaf margins. As the disease progresses, root system decline occurs, which eventually results in the total collapse and death of the plant.
The virus is disseminated primarily by mealybug vectors, specifically Dysmicoccus brevipes and Dysmicoccus neobrevipes. These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy individuals through their saliva during the feeding process, facilitating rapid spread within the field.
