Brown spot of anemone

Brown spot of anemone is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phoma anemones (and related Phoma species). This fungus specifically targets the foliage and stems of anemone plants, compromising their structural integrity and physiological health by destroying plant tissues.

The disease primarily affects various species of the Anemone genus. It is most commonly found in damp, poorly ventilated garden environments where stagnant air and moisture accumulation create ideal conditions for fungal spore germination and colonization.

Key symptoms include the appearance of localized brown or necrotic spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often becoming irregular in shape with dark, defined margins. The development of tiny black fungal fruiting bodies, known as pycnidia, within the lesions is a diagnostic feature.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the disease cycle. Periods of high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures stimulate the spread of spores, which are disseminated by wind or water splashes. The fungus survives the dormant season as mycelium or spores within fallen leaf litter and soil.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach to minimize pathogen pressure:

• Rigorous sanitation by removing and destroying all infected plant material;
• Improving air circulation through proper spacing of plants;
• Implementing drip irrigation to keep foliage dry;
• Applying fungicides containing copper or systemic chemicals during early stages of infection.
