Description
Aphthovirus is the causative genus of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), a severe and highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals. It is critical to note that this is an animal health issue, not a plant pathogen. As a member of the Picornaviridae family, the virus presents a global challenge to livestock agriculture due to its extreme economic impact.
The agent is a single-stranded RNA virus known for high mutation rates and diverse serotypes. These variations make the development of universal vaccines challenging. The virus is highly stable in the environment, capable of surviving in soil, water, and animal products for extended periods, facilitating transmission across borders.
Susceptible hosts include cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and many wild species. The virus spreads through direct contact, respiratory aerosols, contaminated feed, and mechanical transmission via clothing or equipment. Rapid spread within a farm is typical, leading to significant losses in milk and meat production.
The primary clinical manifestations include fever followed by the development of vesicles (aphthae) on the tongue, gums, muzzle, teats, and coronary bands of the hooves. Animals exhibit excessive salivation, lameness, and reduced feed intake. Secondary infections of ruptured vesicles can lead to severe structural damage to the hoof and mouth, causing chronic impairment.
