Celery virus Y (Apium virus Y) is a significant plant disease caused by a virus belonging to the potyvirus group. It targets plants within the Apiaceae family, disrupting essential physiological functions. As a systemic disease, the virus spreads rapidly through the plant's vascular tissues, significantly impairing photosynthetic efficiency and overall plant vigor, which ultimately leads to reduced agricultural output.

The disease primarily affects celery, including leaf, stalk, and celeriac varieties. All commercial cultivars are susceptible, and early-stage infections are particularly devastating for the crop. If the virus establishes itself early in the season, it can severely stunt plant development, resulting in a crop that fails to reach marketable size or quality standards, causing substantial economic losses.

Symptoms of infection are distinct and often manifest as a mosaic pattern of light and dark green spots on the foliage. Infected celery plants typically exhibit reduced growth rates, leaf curling, and yellowing (chlorosis). In severe cases, the stems become stunted or twisted, and the development of the root system or stalks is severely compromised, rendering the produce unfit for both fresh market and processing.

The transmission of Apium virus Y is primarily mediated by insect vectors, most notably various aphid species. The virus is acquired by aphids feeding on infected plants and is transmitted in a non-persistent manner during subsequent feeding on healthy plants. Mechanical transmission via contaminated tools, equipment, or even leaf-to-leaf contact during field operations can also contribute significantly to the rapid spread of the virus within a plantation.

Management of the disease centers on strict preventative measures. Growers should focus on early identification and removal of symptomatic plants to minimize the source of inoculum. Controlling aphid populations through the timely application of systemic insecticides is crucial. Additionally, maintaining weed-free fields is essential, as many common weeds can act as asymptomatic reservoirs for the virus, keeping the cycle of infection active throughout the season.
