Apple proliferation is a destructive plant disease caused by the phytoplasma Candidatus Phytoplasma mali. It is a major economic threat to apple orchards worldwide, affecting the vascular system of the trees and causing a general decline in tree vigor and fruit quality.

The disease pathogen thrives in the phloem of the tree, disrupting the transport of photosynthates. It is primarily transmitted by insect vectors such as the apple psyllid (Cacopsylla mali) and certain species of leafhoppers. Furthermore, human activities, including the use of infected scion wood during grafting and contaminated pruning tools, facilitate the spread of the phytoplasma within orchards.

Symptoms of apple proliferation include the development of the characteristic "witch's broom" effect, which is an abnormal proliferation of axillary buds resulting in stunted, bushy shoots. Additionally, infected trees often display premature leaf reddening, smaller fruit sizes with elongated stems, and a significantly reduced sugar content, rendering the fruit commercially non-viable.

The epidemiology of the disease is closely linked to the life cycle of its insect vectors. Warm weather conditions favor the movement of these vectors, leading to rapid disease transmission within and between orchards. Because the phytoplasma is systemic, it persists within the tree year after year, gradually leading to severe stunting or total orchard decline.

Effective control strategies focus on prevention, as there is no cure for an established infection. Orchardists should implement strict phytosanitary measures, including the systematic removal and destruction of symptomatic trees to eliminate reservoirs of inoculum. Controlling vector populations through integrated pest management and sourcing exclusively certified, disease-free nursery stock are the most critical steps in mitigating the impact of this pathogen.
