Apple platycarpa, colloquially known as flat apple disease, is a viral condition primarily affecting apple trees. It is caused by the Apple platycarpa dwarf virus, a systemic pathogen that disrupts the normal hormonal and vascular functions of the host plant, leading to significant physiological deviations.
The primary host for this virus is the domesticated apple (Malus domestica). While it does not kill the tree immediately, it undermines the tree's productive capacity, which is particularly critical in commercial orchard settings where fruit shape and uniformity are essential for market standards.
Key symptoms include fruit malformation, characterized by extreme flattening and stunted development. Additionally, affected trees often exhibit shortened internodes and a overall dwarfed appearance of the canopy, which is indicative of the systemic nature of the viral infection interfering with the plant's growth regulators.
Transmission occurs almost exclusively through horticultural practices, specifically via grafting infected scion wood onto rootstocks. The virus spreads efficiently during the active growing season when the translocation of nutrients allows the pathogen to establish itself throughout the tree's vascular architecture.
