Apple scar skin viroid

Pathogen and type of disease: The causative agent is the Apple scar skin viroid (ASSVd), belonging to the genus Apscaviroid. Unlike viruses, viroids are composed only of a short strand of circular, single-stranded RNA, lacking a protein coat. This pathogen is highly infectious and can systemically colonize the host plant, causing long-term physiological disruptions.

Affected crops: Apple trees are the primary hosts for this pathogen. However, the viroid can also infect other members of the Rosaceae family, including pear and quince. The disease poses a significant risk to the fruit industry, particularly in nurseries where grafting provides an easy pathway for the pathogen to spread across large batches of saplings.

Symptoms and signs: The most diagnostic symptoms appear on the fruit, characterized by corky, necrotic, or scarred patches on the skin. Affected apples often show stunted growth, distorted shapes, and irregular surface texture. Vegetative growth is also affected, resulting in tree stunting and reduced shoot elongation, which significantly impairs the tree's architecture.

Conditions and impact: The viroid spreads primarily through human-mediated activities: grafting, budding, and the use of contaminated pruning tools. Because it is highly persistent and systemic, it remains in the tree for its entire lifespan. The economic impact is profound due to the loss of marketable fruit quality and the gradual decline of tree vigor, leading to early orchard abandonment.

• Exclusive use of certified virus-indexed and viroid-free nursery stock.
