It belongs to the genus Apscaviroid and poses a significant threat to citrus production worldwide by interfering with the host plant's normal growth and development processes.

The host range is primarily restricted to citrus species, including key limes and other commercial citrus varieties. This pathogen is highly specialized and relies entirely on host cell machinery for its replication, leading to systemic infection throughout the entire vascular system of the tree.

Typical symptoms of infection include severe leaf curling, leaf deformation, and stunted shoot growth. Infected trees often exhibit a decline in overall vigor, which eventually leads to a marked reduction in fruit yield and poor quality of citrus produce, rendering the crop economically non-viable.
