Description

Citrus dwarfing viroid, formally classified as Apscaviroid epsiloncitri, is a significant plant pathogen that induces stunting in various citrus species. Being a viroid, it consists only of a short, single-stranded circular RNA molecule, which replicates autonomously within the host cell, hijacking the plant's metabolic pathways to propagate itself.

The host range of this pathogen primarily includes commercially important citrus varieties such as sweet orange, mandarin, and grapefruit. The severity of the disease is often contingent upon the specific rootstock used, as some rootstock-scion combinations demonstrate extreme sensitivity to the viroid, resulting in significant growth inhibition.

Common clinical signs of infection involve noticeable tree stunting, shortened internodes, and varying degrees of chlorosis in the foliage. Furthermore, the infection affects fruit development, leading to smaller, misshapen fruits with poor juice quality, which negatively impacts the overall yield and market value of the citrus orchard.

Transmission of the viroid primarily occurs through human intervention. The most frequent mode of spread is the use of infected budwood during propagation. Additionally, mechanical transmission via contaminated cutting tools during routine orchard maintenance, such as pruning or hedging, poses a severe risk for horizontal transmission between neighboring trees.

Since no chemical treatment can eradicate the viroid once a tree is infected, prevention is the only viable management strategy. Growers must adopt strict phytosanitary measures to mitigate risk. This includes sourcing planting material from certified disease-free nurseries, rigorous sterilization of pruning equipment between trees, and the systematic removal and destruction of infected symptomatic trees to contain the outbreak.
