Description

The causative agent of this disease is the viroid Apscaviroid fossulamali, a member of the Apscaviroid genus. Unlike viruses, this pathogen consists solely of a small, circular, single-stranded RNA molecule that relies on the host's cellular machinery for its replication, causing systemic metabolic disturbances.

The primary host for this pathogen is the domestic apple (Malus domestica). While the infection is often systemic, it frequently exhibits a latent phase where the tree appears healthy, but the fruit produced shows significant morphological abnormalities once the pathogen reaches a critical titer.

The characteristic symptom is the formation of dimples and depressions on the surface of the fruit, often accompanied by necrotic spots or tissue hardening. As the fruit matures, these indentations become more pronounced, causing the apple to lose its commercial marketability and shelf life due to internal tissue damage.

Transmission occurs primarily through vegetative propagation using infected rootstocks or scion wood. Additionally, mechanical transmission is a major concern, as the viroid is highly transmissible via contaminated pruning shears, grafting knives, or any tools used on multiple trees without proper disinfection.

Integrated disease management is essential, as there is no chemical cure for viroid infections. Key strategies include using virus-free nursery stock, practicing rigorous sanitation by disinfecting all pruning and grafting tools with disinfectants, and the prompt removal and destruction of infected symptomatic trees to stop spread.
