Plum latent viroid (PLVd), scientifically known as Apscaviroid latenspruni, is a significant plant pathogen that causes latent infection in stone fruit trees. Unlike viruses, this viroid consists solely of a small, naked circular RNA molecule, which makes it highly persistent and specialized in hijacking the metabolic processes of its host plants.

The primary host for this pathogen is the European plum (Prunus domestica), though it has been identified in other members of the Prunus genus, including apricots and peaches. The infection is often called "latent" because the trees may harbor the pathogen for years without showing any clear visual symptoms, acting as silent reservoirs for the disease.

Although symptoms are often masked, they can become evident under specific environmental conditions or in sensitive cultivars. Common observations include:

  • stunted growth and reduced vigor of the tree;
  • chlorotic patterns or mosaic-like markings on leaves;
  • malformed fruit with reduced sugar content;
  • early leaf drop and reduced fruit set;
  • increased susceptibility to frost and drought damage.

The transmission of Apscaviroid latenspruni occurs mainly through human intervention. Grafting infected scion wood onto rootstocks is the primary method of long-distance spread. Additionally, contaminated pruning equipment, such as saws and shears, serves as a major vector for disease transmission within an orchard if not properly sanitized between trees.

There are no chemical treatments available to cure trees once they are infected with a viroid, which makes exclusion and prevention the only effective strategies. Growers should prioritize sourcing certified virus-free nursery stock. Implementing strict sanitation protocols, such as disinfecting pruning tools with bleach or alcohol, is essential to minimize the risk of horizontal spread within commercial and private orchards.
