Description
The causal agent of this pathology is Apscaviroid zetacitri, a pathogenic viroid characterized by a circular single-stranded RNA molecule. Unlike viruses, it lacks a protein coat and relies entirely on the plant host's machinery for replication, causing profound metabolic changes that disrupt normal development and hormonal balance in citrus tissues.
This pathogen specifically affects various citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. It is a major concern for citrus growers worldwide, as it can cause significant economic losses by reducing both the quantity and quality of the fruit yield, often causing the trees to become stunted and unproductive over the long term.
Symptoms of Apscaviroid zetacitri infection are characterized by severe growth reduction, shortened internodes, and smaller, often misshapen fruit. Foliar chlorosis and general canopy thinning are common signs of the disease. In some susceptible varieties, the infection can cause bark scaling and branch dieback, eventually leading to a complete decline in tree vigor.
Transmission occurs primarily through infected propagation material, such as budwood and rootstocks. Mechanical transmission is another critical pathway, occurring when contaminated tools are used for pruning or grafting without proper sanitation. The viroid can remain stable on the surfaces of equipment for extended periods, making tool hygiene vital for preventing its spread between trees.
Prevention is the only effective management strategy because there is no cure for established viroid infections. Growers must rely on using certified virus-free nursery stock and implementing strict sanitary protocols. Regular monitoring through diagnostic techniques like RT-PCR is essential for early detection, and infected trees should be promptly removed and destroyed to protect the remaining orchard.
