Arfiviricetes is a major class of viruses within the Pisuviricota phylum, responsible for numerous plant viral diseases worldwide. These agents are strictly intracellular pathogens that rely entirely on the host plant's cellular machinery to replicate. Due to their ability to manipulate the host's physiological pathways, they pose a significant threat to global food security and agricultural productivity.
The pathology caused by Arfiviricetes is characterized as a systemic viral infection. Once a plant is infected, the virus spreads through the phloem to various parts of the plant, disrupting vital functions like photosynthesis and nutrient transport. This interference leads to chronic stress and often renders the host plant unproductive, reducing biomass and commercial yield significantly.
