Description
Plum pox virus (PPV), commonly known as Sharka, is recognized as the most devastating viral disease affecting stone fruit trees worldwide. It is caused by a virus in the Potyvirus genus, which induces systemic infection in susceptible Prunus species and leads to significant economic losses in the agricultural sector.
The virus affects a wide range of fruit trees including plums, apricots, peaches, and nectarines. Once an orchard is infected, the pathogen spreads rapidly throughout the tree canopy and root system, disrupting physiological processes and causing chronic stress that ultimately reduces the lifespan of the host plant.
Symptoms are typically characterized by chlorotic rings, spots, or bands on the leaves. On the fruit, the disease manifests as irregular, sunken depressions, deformations, and localized necrosis. These physical changes severely degrade fruit quality, making them commercially unviable and often causing premature fruit drop.
The primary vectors for the spread of PPV in orchards are aphid species, which transmit the virus in a non-persistent manner. In addition to insect vectors, human activities such as grafting with infected scions or the movement of contaminated nursery stock play a major role in the inter-regional dissemination of the pathogen.
Due to the absence of curative treatments for infected trees, management relies heavily on strict phytosanitary measures. Prevention strategies focus on the mandatory use of certified virus-free propagation material, aggressive aphid control programs, and immediate eradication of symptomatic trees to limit the spread of the virus within the orchard environment.
