Oat yellow dwarf virus, classified within the Avenavirus genus, is a serious viral pathogen that affects various cereal crops. Unlike many other plant viruses, it cannot be transmitted mechanically through contact; it spreads exclusively via persistent transmission by aphid vectors that feed on the phloem of infected host plants.

The host range of the virus includes major cultivated cereals such as oats, barley, wheat, and rye, as well as a significant number of wild grass species.
