Description

Avsunviroids (family Avsunviroidae) represent a unique group of plant pathogens characterized by small, circular, single-stranded RNA molecules. Unlike viruses, they lack a protein coat and rely entirely on host cell enzymes for replication. A defining biological feature of this family is that their replication occurs within the chloroplasts of the host plant cells.

These viroids primarily infect woody perennial crops. The most economically significant member is the Avocado Sunblotch Viroid (ASBVd), which causes severe economic losses in avocado production worldwide by reducing yields and affecting fruit quality, leading to distorted shapes and discoloration.

Symptoms of infection often include leaf chlorosis, mosaic patterns, stunted growth, and specific bark lesions. However, the disease frequently presents in a latent or symptomless form. In such cases, the plant remains a reservoir of the pathogen, contributing to its spread within the orchard without showing obvious signs of distress.

The transmission of avsunviroids is primarily mechanical. It spreads through contaminated pruning tools, grafting activities, infected budwood, and occasionally through pollen or seeds. High light intensity and warm temperatures are environmental factors that can accelerate the viroid replication cycle within the chloroplasts.

Because there are no curative chemical treatments for viroid infections in plants, management focuses on strict sanitation and prevention. Key strategies include:

  • Sourcing certified disease-free propagation material for new orchards.
  • Implementing rigorous sterilization protocols for all pruning and grafting equipment using bleach or disinfectants.
  • Conducting regular diagnostic testing using molecular techniques like RT-PCR to identify latent carriers.
  • Removing and destroying infected plants to limit the spread of the pathogen to healthy trees.
