Avocado albinism viroid, scientifically designated as Avsunviroid albamaculaperseae, is a small infectious RNA molecule belonging to the Avsunviroidae family. Unlike viruses, it lacks a protein coat and relies entirely on the host plant's replication machinery to propagate and cause systemic infection.

The primary host for this pathogen is the avocado tree (Persea americana). It is known for inducing distinctive albino or white-colored spots on the foliage, which is the hallmark of the infection. The viroid disrupts normal chloroplast development and chlorophyll synthesis within the leaves.

Symptoms are mainly observed on the leaves, where the characteristic white patches appear. As the infection progresses, affected leaves may show distortion, stunted growth, and a reduction in photosynthetic efficiency. This negatively impacts the tree's overall vigor and can lead to a decrease in fruit quantity and quality.

Transmission occurs primarily through vegetative propagation, such as the use of infected scions or rootstocks. Additionally, the pathogen can be spread mechanically in orchards through pruning tools that have not been sterilized after contact with an infected tree, allowing for the rapid spread of the viroid in a plantation.

Prevention is the only viable management strategy as there are no chemical treatments to cure infected trees. Growers should focus on using certified disease-free propagation material and implementing strict sanitation protocols. Cleaning tools with bleach or similar disinfectants between trees is essential to prevent horizontal transmission.
