Description

Babuvirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Nanoviridae family. These pathogens are recognized for causing severe systemic diseases in monocotyledonous plants, with the Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) representing the most economically significant member of the genus, affecting banana production globally.

The virus consists of a multi-component genome containing circular single-stranded DNA. It targets the phloem tissue of host plants, disrupting the translocation of nutrients. While the virus can infect various species within the Musaceae family, its impact is most devastating in commercial banana plantations, where it can cause total yield failure.

Transmission occurs exclusively through the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa, which acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap. The virus is not soil-borne, nor does it spread through mechanical contact between plants. However, long-distance transmission is facilitated by the human-mediated movement of infected vegetative propagules, such as suckers or corms.

Infected plants display distinct symptomatic patterns, typically characterized by stunted growth. The leaves emerge smaller, narrower, and exhibit an upright, bunched appearance at the apex of the stem. Chlorotic streaks and wavy leaf margins are common, and in advanced stages, the plant becomes completely sterile, rendering fruit production impossible.

Managing Babuvirus relies heavily on integrated pest management and quarantine measures. There is no curative treatment for infected plants; therefore, eradication is the primary control strategy. Farmers must implement strict sanitation, including the destruction of diseased plants, the use of certified virus-free planting materials, and the application of insecticides to control aphid vectors.
