Description
Cardamom bushy dwarf virus, scientifically attributed to Babuvirus cardamomi, is a significant viral pathogen affecting Elettaria cardamomum. This disease causes systemic infection, severely impacting plant development and productivity by interfering with the host's physiological pathways.
The primary host for this virus is cardamom, a high-value spice crop. The virus causes devastating economic losses, especially in regions where cardamom is grown under intensive management. The inability of affected plants to produce capsules leads to significant yield reduction across entire plantations.
The hallmark symptoms of the disease include stunted growth, which gives the plant a bushy or dwarf appearance. Leaves exhibit chlorosis, curling, and drastic size reduction. Because the virus disrupts normal development, infected plants fail to produce inflorescences, rendering them unproductive within the plantation.
Disease transmission is primarily facilitated by insect vectors, specifically aphids that transmit the virus while feeding on plant sap.
